“I’m Already Doing It!”

I wasn’t expecting that answer. It was 2005, and I was calling some of the key people involved in food and agriculture across Northern Nevada. For several years, our community work had been evolving from what we called a Local Living Economy Network toward another more focused sector: local food. We were asking where our food came from, whether our region could feed itself, and how we might strengthen relationships among growers, restaurants, markets, institutions, and families.

My first call was to the owner of one of the oldest farms near Fallon, Nevada. His family had been farming there for five generations. I already knew him through our Buy Local work, and he was also a small-business counselor. If anyone understood both farming and the local economy, I thought, he would.

I asked what he thought about creating a Local Food System Network. “I’m already doing it!” he replied.

That stopped me. “Okay,” I said. “Pretend you’re an eagle flying over your network. What would you see?” He described the farmers and ranchers he knew. Then I asked about other parts of a local food system. Farmers’ markets? No. Community-supported agriculture? No. Farm-to-table restaurants? No. Most of his crops, in fact, were being sold outside the region.

He certainly had a network, and an important one. But it was one part of a much larger ecosystem whose other parts were largely invisible from where he stood. I asked whether he would be interested in meeting some of those other people and seeing what might happen if we connected their worlds. He said yes.

That thirty-minute conversation became the first step toward what eventually became the Northern Nevada Local Food System Network.

For years I interpreted “I’m already doing it” as resistance. Only much later did I understand that he had been telling me something far more important. He really was already doing it. And so was almost everyone else, from where they stood.

The Good Was Already There

As I became more deeply involved in community work, I found no shortage of people trying to make the world better. Farmers were producing food, small-business owners employing people, churches feeding families, nonprofits helping people through crises, environmentalists protecting watersheds, civic groups organizing neighborhoods, activists fighting injustice, and public servants trying to make systems work.

The problem was not an absence of goodness. Much of that goodness simply lived in separate worlds. Local-food people knew local-food people. Businesspeople knew businesspeople. Faith communities had their circles. Progressives organized with progressives, conservatives with conservatives.

At one of our first large food-system gatherings, nearly a hundred regional leaders came together. The director of the local food bank stood and said something that stayed with me: she had wanted something like this for ten years. She simply hadn’t had the time to do it.

She didn’t lack vision or commitment. She was busy running a food bank. I began seeing the same paradox everywhere: the more responsible people are for the good work already in front of them, the less capacity they have to see and connect with the good beyond it. The pastor has a congregation. The farmer has a farm. The entrepreneur has customers and employees. The activist has a cause.

Everybody is already doing it.

The Separation I Carried Within

I could tell this story as though I were the enlightened connector who saw the silos everybody else had missed. But that isn’t what happened. Some of the most important boundaries I discovered were inside me.

One involved Christianity. I had developed a real antipathy toward it, shaped by what I had observed in American culture and politics and by my own assumptions and experiences. Eventually I had to acknowledge something uncomfortable: I was prejudiced.

The irony was difficult to miss. I already considered myself a follower of Jesus, yet as a progressive, left-leaning community networker I had largely left Christian churches out of the networks I was building. I was trying to connect the community while placing one of its largest communities inside a category that kept it at a distance.

I considered myself open-minded. I was interested in Indigenous spirituality, Buddhism, mystical traditions, science, systems thinking, and other ways of understanding reality. Yet I was judging an enormous spiritual tradition, and billions of my fellow human beings, through assumptions I had barely tested.

So I began engaging with Christian communities instead of treating Christianity as an abstraction. I visited churches, talked with pastors, and formed relationships with people whose beliefs and language sometimes made me uncomfortable. At lunch with an evangelical Christian friend, I noticed myself tightening as he spoke. I disagreed with some of what he was saying and wanted to correct him.

Then I noticed the loving intention beneath his words, our shared concern for the community, and the person sitting across from me.

The disagreement didn’t disappear, but for a moment it stopped defining the relationship. I could see him again, not primarily as an evangelical or conservative, but as a fellow human being. We saw some things very differently, but we shared a desire to serve the community.

The farmer could see his agricultural network but not the larger food ecosystem. I could see “Christian” before I could fully see the person. In both cases, the larger relationship was already there. What had to change was our capacity to recognize it.

Trying to Change the System from Within

I encountered another dimension of the problem as an executive director in the nonprofit world. In 1997, I was recruited to lead the San Diego Food Bank, a 100,000-square-foot operation with twenty employees and hundreds of organizations depending on us for food. I arrived with an ambitious mission: I wanted to help end hunger in San Diego County.

At my first team meeting, I asked, “How many of you believe we can end hunger in San Diego County?” One hand went up. Only one of twenty employees believed it was possible. We had become extraordinarily good at alleviating hunger without seriously asking what it would take to eliminate it.

We did good work, distributing enormous amounts of food through churches, shelters, and nonprofits. I pushed toward empowerment and self-reliance, but an uncomfortable question remained: were we ending hunger, or becoming increasingly effective at managing it?

I was surrounded by good people doing good things, yet funding structures, bureaucratic interests, and organizational incentives made fundamental change extraordinarily difficult. Eventually I left, drawn toward economic empowerment as a way of addressing hunger closer to its roots.

I became director of the Nevada Micro-Enterprise Initiative, helping low-income entrepreneurs gain skills, financing, and economic agency. The impact could be transformative: one client who had once been homeless eventually became a caterer for events at the Governor’s residence. But another limitation soon became clear.

We could help someone start a business, but without a supportive community and economic ecosystem around them, they were largely on their own.

Different nonprofit. Different strategy. Same underlying constraint: good people doing good work inside structures that limited what they could accomplish together. I experienced it simply as good people and organizations bumping against the limits of the structures through which they were trying to serve.

I was frustrated.

Yet institutional constraint was only part of the puzzle. Even communities with deep relationships, shared purpose, and a spiritual foundation could remain separated from the larger whole.

Islands of Coherence

Years later, in Jerusalem, I encountered another version of “I’m already doing it.” I was staying at a Catholic facility created for Christian and other pilgrims and got to know the priest who directed it. We connected easily. Both of us understood our lives in terms of our individual calling, and both believed that God calls us toward love and service.

His work wasn’t narrowly Catholic. He worked with Protestants and Orthodox Christians and was involved in projects serving a wider community. As I described my hope of building bridges among separated groups, he responded with those familiar words: “I’m already doing it.”

This time I couldn’t explain the response by saying someone had failed to discover the spiritual foundation of community. He was a priest. His tradition already contained the pattern I was talking about: Love God. Love your neighbor. Serve others. Care for the poor. Seek reconciliation. Become one body. And, more importantly, in his own way, he was doing it.

The encounter forced me to refocus my question. Perhaps the issue wasn’t whether people understood service, or even whether they recognized a transcendent source of Love. Perhaps the deeper problem was that we create genuine connection and coherence within our own communities while remaining separated from other communities doing much the same thing.

Churches, movements, nonprofits, businesses, political groups, regenerative communities, and spiritual communities can all possess deep coherence. But the identity that creates belonging can also create an invisible boundary around it. Strong communities can become remarkably coherent within themselves while struggling to recognize the good beyond their boundaries. Each sees a piece of the puzzle. None sees the whole picture.

I began seeing versions of this pattern in very different worlds, and in myself. As a progressive organizer, I had often conflated the dominance of large corporations and governments with local, small business itself. Only after becoming a small-business owner did I see how crude that category was. Main Street businesses were not simply miniature versions of the oligarchic institutions I opposed; they were part of the fabric of their communities.

Then the symmetry became hard to miss. A national Christian organization once asked me to help create a Christian business network. In my local-economy work, some wanted a green-business network; in our local-food work, some wanted to include only organic producers. In regenerative circles, I encountered the same instinct to begin with people and businesses already committed to regeneration. The convictions differed, but the organizing logic was similar: gather those who already embody our vision of the good.

There is nothing inherently wrong with affinity. People naturally gather around shared identities, beliefs, interests, and purposes, and those relationships can create tremendous good. The problem comes when the boundary of the affinity group becomes the boundary of the good we are capable of seeing. The causes changed. The boundary kept reappearing.

I began to wonder whether separation was not merely a problem our movements were trying to solve, but something all of us, including me, had inherited from the culture that formed us. And there was another practical reality: the priest must tend his ministry, the activist the movement, the executive the organization.

This is not necessarily a moral failure; it is often simply how our world is organized.

Beyond Network Weaving

I began to see bridge-building as a distinct relational social function: someone has to notice relationships hidden by the Culture of Separation and help coherent communities discover one another without asking them to surrender what makes them distinct. Bridge-builders are not called to create the good, but to help connect it.

For me, that work became part of a larger sacred act: bringing together what has been separated. The seventh-century Orthodox Christian St. Maximus the Confessor described the human vocation as one of uniting what has been divided, ultimately gathering the cosmos into unity through Love.

I also discovered that I was hardly alone. There is an entire field of bridge builders, network weavers, systems thinkers, and community connectors doing remarkable work. They build trust, connect organizations and projects, cultivate shared purpose, distribute leadership, and help networks become more collaborative and resilient.

Some also recognize inner transformation and a deeper interconnection underlying the work. In many ways, they had discovered the same practical necessity I had.

The Relationship Precedes the Network

That’s when it dawned on me that the first task is not creating coherence but recognizing it. The islands do not first have to become related; they have to recognize a deeper relationship that already precedes the network.

Many networks begin with an issue, constituency, or shared theory of change. That can be enormously valuable. But a network organized around climate, food, faith, regenerative agriculture, economic justice, or any other concern can become a coherent world whose perimeter is largely established by the issue that brought people together.

It can overcome separation within its field while leaving larger boundaries among identities, ideologies, sectors, and communities intact.

Even a vast network of networks can therefore remain an island of coherence. Networks are extraordinarily good at connecting people and organizations that already recognize themselves as related. The harder challenge is creating relationship among people and institutions that do not yet see themselves as belonging to the same field of concern.

The task is not to dissolve these islands or erase what makes them distinct, but to make their boundaries permeable to relationship.

Each network offers a legitimate window onto reality. The problem arises when we mistake the view from one window for the whole landscape. My experience kept pushing me toward a different starting point: the Christian and the Pagan are related before they agree. The conservative and progressive are related before they agree. The farmer and environmentalist are related before they discover a shared project.

Much movement building and network weaving begins with a shared issue, identity, constituency, or theory of change: gather people who resonate around that concern, strengthen relationships among them, develop cooperation, and create the coordination and structures that can carry the work. That sequence can accomplish tremendous good. My experience, however, led me toward a different starting point.

The deeper coherence does not arise because people first agree on an issue or join a network. The relationship precedes the network. We begin by recognizing a spiritual and relational coherence in which people already participate across differences of belief, identity, sector, or ideology. From that recognition, relationship and trust can deepen; trust makes cooperation possible; cooperation makes coordination useful; and structure can emerge to serve the life already present.

The Ancient Blueprint asks us first to recognize that prior relationship, a divine pattern of wisdom and relational order woven into creation.

That changes both whom we connect and why.

Do We Need Another Movement?

That realization created a challenge for my own work. If fragmentation was the problem, why not create a movement dedicated to overcoming fragmentation? Because eventually that movement, too, could become another silo, with its own brand, identity, members, funding, leaders, and boundaries.

I began to wonder whether “I’m already doing it” sometimes carried another message: people may have heard me offering yet another way to build community, competing with the many ways they were already doing it. The answer was not to persuade them to join my approach, but to become clearer about what I was actually trying to do: recognize and connect what was already alive.

I had watched organizations gradually consume the attention needed to sustain themselves. Projects require funding, administration, recognition, and leadership. All of that may be necessary, but it can leave less energy for expanding relationships beyond the organization itself. I began to release the idea that the answer was one more organization to join.

That is why, in Reno, I resisted when someone suggested that our emerging food network start a community garden. People were puzzled. Why would anyone be against a community garden? It felt a little like opposing motherhood, apple pie, and kittens. But if we ran the garden, soon our meetings would be about irrigation, volunteer schedules, seeds, budgets, and who forgot to lock the shed.

All worthwhile things, but we would have become a community-garden organization.

Instead, I wanted to connect the people already growing gardens, operating farms, running restaurants, fighting hunger, selling food, and trying to build a healthier region. We didn’t need to own the projects. We needed to connect the good.

As a consequence, the food network grew. Farmers’ markets expanded. Restaurants and growers formed relationships. People who had regarded one another as competitors began acting more like colleagues. Local agriculture gained cultural legitimacy. And those community gardens we didn’t start? They appeared anyway. Dozens of projects emerged once the relationships were alive.

By then, I had begun to see that the good was already present, but often separated by the boundaries of our organizations, identities, movements, and worldviews.

But a deeper question remained: was connection simply a strategy for social change, or did it reveal something more fundamental about the nature of reality itself?

Listening to it again now, I’m struck by how much of the journey I have been writing about was already there, long before I had words like Culture of Separation, Ancient Blueprint, or Symbiotic Culture.

I wrote then that:

And the message I heard was intensely practical: become an empty vessel for Love; love those who are different from you, across clans and tribes; begin with yourself and your family; serve the people, rivers, living things, and culture of the place where you live.

Looking back, I can see a progression running through that experience:

Heart of Love → empty vessel → love across clans and tribes → self and family → people and living beings of the region → community → nation and world → thousands of local communities.

Listening to those words more than 35 years later, I now have language that helps me make sense of what I experienced then. The ancient Christian understanding of the Logos helped me make sense of the deeper wisdom and relational order I sensed woven through creation.

I have come to see Love not simply as a feeling or sentiment, but as part of the invisible architecture of reality—the relational power through which life is held together.

And how might that Love move from an inner spiritual reality into the relationships and structures of human life?

What I have come to call the Ancient Blueprint is the recurring pattern I first witnessed in nature and later began searching for in human life—a pattern through which Love can take form, from inner transformation, through Virtue and relationship, into families, communities, institutions, and ultimately culture.

Most striking to me now is the vision at the end of the poem: thousands of local communities coming together through what I called an “unnamed eruption of spirit.”

I’ve spent much of the last 35 years trying to understand how such a vision could actually become a lived social reality.

Over the last few years, in conversations with friends and colleagues in nonreligious spiritual, regenerative, and new-economy circles, I kept hearing a different answer: bring people together under the right conditions, and coherence can self-organize. Create the right relationships and processes, and new possibilities can emerge.

I have come to wonder whether this is only half the story.

This doesn’t reject emergence or self-organization. It places them within a larger frame: coherence can emerge among us because we are participating in a coherence that precedes us.

This may also offer a bridge between two worlds that too often speak different languages: people rooted in religious traditions and those exploring spirituality outside religion. Perhaps both are reaching toward different dimensions of the same mystery—how we participate in something larger than ourselves and bring it alive in the world.

And that has led me to a possibility that turns much of our conventional approach to social change around:

That discovery is at the heart of a new essay I’m working on.

And if coherence precedes design, another question follows:

What might a strategy for social change actually look like if we began there?

In the first four FAQs, we explored a remarkable possibility. Beneath the conflicts, divisions, and uncertainty of our age lies an Ancient Blueprint—the deeper spiritual order through which Divine Love is expressed in creation. Yet one question refused to leave me.

If the Ancient Blueprint is real... if Divine Love continues working quietly within humanity... and if countless people and organizations are already devoted to healing, justice, stewardship, reconciliation, and the common good... why does our world continue becoming more fragmented?

For years, I assumed the answer was simple. We needed more good people, stronger organizations, and more effective movements.

Then something unexpected began happening.

While helping build the Living Economy, Local Food System, and Neighbor Networks in northern Nevada, I kept encountering extraordinary people already serving their communities. Churches, nonprofits, businesses, educators, neighborhood leaders, civic organizations, and ordinary citizens were doing remarkable work. I wasn’t discovering a shortage of goodness. I was discovering an abundance of it.

Yet much of that goodness remained disconnected.

As I gradually recognized how deeply the Culture of Separation had shaped my own life, I also began seeing how it shaped the wider community. It had not only divided society into competing groups. It had quietly separated many of the very people and organizations through which the Ancient Blueprint was already becoming visible.

Everything changed when I stopped asking how to build one more movement and began asking a different question.

I. THE HIDDEN CRISIS

1. Why can’t one movement heal the world?

Every generation gives birth to extraordinary people and extraordinary movements. Throughout history, communities have embodied compassion, justice, stewardship, service, reconciliation, creativity, environmental care, spiritual renewal, and countless other expressions of human flourishing.

Whether they recognize it in explicitly Christian language or not, I believe each reflects part of the Ancient Blueprint—the deeper order through which Divine Love is expressed in creation.

For many years, I believed that if enough people embraced the right vision, genuine cultural transformation would follow. Like many movement leaders, I assumed the right movement could eventually change the world.

Over time, however, I began noticing something unexpected. Every movement, no matter how faithful or effective, illuminated only part of a much larger reality. Each expressed something true. Each embodied something beautiful. Yet none could embody the fullness of the Ancient Blueprint.

After four decades of working alongside remarkable people and communities, I reached an unavoidable conclusion. No single movement can regenerate society alone—not because movements are failing, but because the Ancient Blueprint is too rich to be embodied by any single church, nonprofit, business, civic initiative, educational institution, or social movement.

2. If so much good is already happening, why does society continue becoming more fragmented?

That realization naturally led to another question. If so many people are already responding to the Ancient Blueprint, why does the world still feel so divided?

One experience has stayed with me for years.

While helping organize the Local Food System Network in northern Nevada, I invited an elder farmer to participate. Before I had even finished describing the idea, he smiled and said,

“I’m already doing that.”

In one sense, he was right. He grew food. But almost all of it was a single commodity crop sold into wholesale markets. He had very few relationships with local schools, restaurants, neighboring farmers, food banks, and others who together formed a living food system. He was contributing to the food system without seeing himself as part of the larger one.

Over the years I heard some version of that response again and again. The people saying it were sincere. They were already doing important work. What they couldn’t yet see was how many others, pursuing very different callings, were responding to the same deeper reality.

That experience helped me recognize that the Culture of Separation does more than divide individuals or societies. It fragments the visible expression of the Ancient Blueprint itself, preventing people from recognizing they already belong to something much larger.

3. What deeper pattern lies beneath our many crises?

For years, I viewed political polarization, loneliness, environmental degradation, declining trust, economic inequality, violence, institutional breakdown, and spiritual confusion as separate problems requiring separate solutions.

Gradually, I began asking a different question. What if they were all symptoms of something deeper?

Over time I came to understand them as different expressions of what I call the Culture of Separation—a way of seeing the world that fractures our relationship with God, with one another, with creation, and even with ourselves.

Then another realization followed.

The Culture of Separation not only creates brokenness. It conceals wholeness. Divine Love continues expressing itself through the Ancient Blueprint, quietly inspiring compassion, courage, generosity, stewardship, and service.

Yet we often fail to recognize that deeper coherence because we have learned to see isolated efforts instead of the larger pattern already emerging around us.

The deeper crisis is not simply that separation exists.

II. THE FRAGMENTATION PARADOX

4. Why do good movements naturally become isolated?

The more I reflected on what I was seeing, the more another pattern emerged.

At first, I assumed fragmentation existed primarily between opposing groups. Instead, I found it within the very communities devoted to healing it. Churches, nonprofits, businesses, civic organizations, environmental groups, educators, neighborhood associations, and faith communities often developed remarkable trust, shared purpose, and integrity. None intended to become isolated. They were simply trying to be faithful to their calling.

Gradually, I realized this wasn’t a failure. It was a natural consequence of healthy community. Every authentic movement develops its own relationships, language, culture, and practices. Diversity is part of the richness of the Ancient Blueprint. No single community could ever embody its fullness.

The problem begins when our perception is shaped more by tribal identity than by shared purpose. Once we identify with a particular tribe—religious or secular, conservative or progressive—we naturally notice differences before recognizing the good another community may already be bringing into the world.

5. How does internal coherence unintentionally become external separation?

One of the most surprising discoveries of my journey was that the very qualities that make a community healthy can also make it difficult to recognize other healthy communities.

As trust grows, communities naturally deepen their shared language, relationships, and mission. Their attention becomes focused on the people within their own network. That isn’t a flaw. It is simply how human communities form.

The challenge arises when that healthy internal coherence becomes the lens through which everyone else is viewed. Without realizing it, we begin asking:

Do they think like we do? Are they one of us? Those questions quietly replace a more important one:

How is the Ancient Blueprint already becoming visible through them?

The result is rarely hostility. More often, it is invisibility. We simply fail to recognize fellow participants in a much larger work.

6. Why is the larger pattern so difficult to see?

For years, I assumed fragmentation existed because people needed better communication or stronger networks. Those things help, but they do not reach the deeper issue.

The Culture of Separation shapes perception before it shapes behavior. It trains us to notice what distinguishes one community from another while overlooking what already unites them. We become skilled at recognizing labels—religious or secular, left or right, nonprofit or business—but far less skilled at recognizing the deeper reality they may already share.

As my own assumptions changed, so did the questions I asked. Instead of asking whether people belonged to the same movement, I began asking whether they were responding to the same deeper reality.

That simple shift changed everything.

Communities that had once appeared unrelated began looking like different expressions of the same Ancient Blueprint.

7. Can healing movements unintentionally reproduce separation?

This was perhaps the hardest realization because it included my own work.

Movements devoted to healing society can unintentionally reproduce the very patterns they hope to overcome. We gather people around a shared vision. We strengthen relationships within our own community. We celebrate progress together. All of this is healthy and necessary.

The danger comes when we quietly assume our movement represents the primary path toward cultural renewal. We may never say it aloud, yet our attention gradually narrows toward strengthening our own circle instead of recognizing how many other circles are faithfully serving the same larger purpose.

That realization transformed my understanding of leadership. I became less interested in building one more movement and more interested in helping existing movements recognize one another.

Instead of asking, “How can we grow our movement?” I increasingly found myself asking,

“How can we help the good that is already emerging recognize itself as part of something larger?”

III. CONNECTING THE GOOD THAT IS ALREADY EMERGING

8. What do I mean by “Connecting the Good”?

For many years I assumed these remarkable communities were becoming coherent simply because healthy people were learning to work well together. Healthy relationships certainly mattered.

Gradually, however, I came to see something deeper.

Their relationships became coherent because they were aligning themselves—often without realizing it—with the Ancient Blueprint, the deeper order through which Divine Love is expressed in creation.

Years later I encountered Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ilya Prigogine’s phrase, “Islands of Coherence.” It gave language to something I had already been observing: pockets of extraordinary coherence emerging within a fragmented world.

But the important discovery was never the label. It was recognizing that these expressions of the Ancient Blueprint were already emerging throughout society, often without knowing one another.

That realization changed my understanding of cultural transformation. Instead of asking how to create more good, I began asking how we might connect the good that is already emerging.

9. Where is the good already emerging?

Once I began looking through this new lens, I started seeing these expressions almost everywhere.

I found them in churches serving their neighborhoods, nonprofits restoring dignity, businesses committed to serving people rather than simply maximizing profit, schools, farms, neighborhood associations, environmental initiatives, civic organizations, and countless informal networks quietly responding to the needs around them.

These communities often differed profoundly in their politics, theology, culture, and organizational structure. Many would probably never have attended one another’s conferences or joined one another’s organizations.

Yet beneath those differences, I kept recognizing the same deeper pattern. They cultivated trust. They practiced service. They strengthened relationships. They honored human dignity. They sought the flourishing of both people and place.

They were not becoming the same.

10. Why does recognizing the good that is already emerging give us hope?

For years I believed hope depended primarily on building something new. Gradually I realized hope also comes from recognizing what already exists.

Every time we discover another community embodying compassion, stewardship, reconciliation, courage, generosity, or service, we are reminded that the Ancient Blueprint has never disappeared. Divine Love continues expressing itself through ordinary people in extraordinary ways, often far beyond the boundaries of any single movement or tradition.

The story of our time begins to change.

Instead of seeing a world defined primarily by conflict, we begin recognizing countless seeds of renewal already taking root. Instead of asking where hope can be found, we begin asking how these many expressions of hope might recognize and strengthen one another.

11. If so much good is already emerging, why does fragmentation continue?

Recognizing the good is only the beginning.

Most of these communities remain largely unaware of one another. They continue serving faithfully within their own circles, often carrying burdens that neighboring communities are carrying as well, without realizing they are participating in a much larger story.

The issue is rarely a lack of goodwill. More often it is a lack of recognition. We have inherited habits of perception that encourage us to notice differences before common purpose, tribal identity before shared responsibility, and organizational boundaries before the deeper coherence already present among us.

That is why celebrating good work is not enough. The next step is helping these many expressions of the Ancient Blueprint recognize one another—not by asking them to become the same, but by helping them discover they already belong to something larger.

IV. A NEW POSSIBILITY

12. What do these diverse expressions of the good have in common?

The more communities I encountered, the less interested I became in what separated them and the more curious I became about what united them.

Their beliefs, traditions, organizational structures, and political perspectives often differed dramatically. Some were explicitly Christian. Others were rooted in different religious traditions or no religious tradition at all. Some focused on environmental restoration. Others worked in education, business, neighborhood development, poverty, healthcare, or civic renewal.

Yet beneath those visible differences, I kept recognizing the same deeper pattern. They cultivated trust rather than suspicion, service rather than self-interest, responsibility rather than indifference, generosity rather than scarcity, and relationships rather than isolation.

Whether they recognized it or not, they were participating in the Ancient Blueprint through which Divine Love continues expressing itself in creation.

I gradually realized that cultural renewal does not begin with agreement.

13. What becomes possible when we begin connecting the good?

One experience has stayed with me because it revealed what I had been searching for all along.

I introduced a conservative Christian pastor and a self-described “neo-Pagan” community leader. On paper, they appeared to have almost nothing in common. Their spiritual beliefs, political perspectives, and cultural identities were very different. Under ordinary circumstances, they probably would never have met.

Then the conversation turned toward strengthening their local food system. They we both elder organic farmers.

Suddenly, the differences that had seemed so important became secondary to a shared love for their community and local food. Neither abandoned their convictions. Neither needed to become someone else. They simply discovered they were already serving the same larger purpose.

That moment changed my understanding of bridge-building.

Connecting the good is not about creating agreement. It is about helping people recognize one another as fellow participants in the larger work of cultivating human and community flourishing.

14. Why is the capacity to connect the good becoming so important today?

Our age does not suffer from a shortage of people who care. It suffers from a shortage of relationships between those who care.

Every day, organizations, congregations, businesses, schools, neighborhood leaders, and informal community networks respond to real human needs. Most are already working as hard as they can. The deeper opportunity is not asking them to do more, but helping them discover one another.

Communities need people who can recognize these many expressions of the good, reveal their complementary gifts, and weave relationships between them without asking them to surrender their unique identities.

15. What if the future depends less on building one more movement and more on connecting the good that is already emerging?

This question gradually changed the direction of my life.

For years, I assumed my calling was to build successful organizations and movements. Eventually, I found myself asking a different question.

What if the next stage of cultural renewal is not creating more expressions of the good, but helping the many expressions already present recognize themselves as part of something larger?

Again and again, I met remarkable leaders who sincerely told me,

“We’re already doing that.”

In one sense, they were right. They were serving faithfully within their own communities. Yet most had little awareness of how many others—often very different from themselves—were responding to the same deeper reality.

Connecting the good does not diminish the unique calling of any movement. It allows every movement to become more fully itself by recognizing its place within a much larger story.

V. THE THRESHOLD

16. If connecting the good is so important, why hasn’t it become a movement already?

This question stayed with me for a long time.

If the opportunity is so significant, why hasn’t someone already created a movement dedicated to connecting the good? Gradually, I realized I had been asking the wrong question.

Every movement, no matter how generous or visionary, naturally develops its own identity, language, leadership, and culture. Those qualities give it strength, but they also create another center of gravity within an already fragmented landscape. Before long, even a movement devoted to connection can become one more community asking others to join it.

That realization forced me to rethink my own assumptions.

Perhaps the deepest need is not another movement competing for attention, members, or influence. Perhaps it is something that strengthens the relationships between existing movements while allowing each to remain faithful to its unique calling.

17. If Symbiotic Culture isn’t another movement, then what is it?

The more I reflected on these questions, the clearer one realization became.

Symbiotic Culture is not asking people to leave the communities they already love. It is not asking churches, nonprofits, businesses, civic organizations, or existing movements to become something different.

It exists to help them recognize one another.

It offers a relational architecture through which the many expressions of the Ancient Blueprint become more visible to one another, learn from one another, collaborate where appropriate, and strengthen the larger fabric of community life without surrendering their own identities or callings.

In that sense, Symbiotic Culture is less a movement than a way of seeing, a way of relating, and eventually a way of organizing community life that helps the good already present become more coherent without demanding greater uniformity.

The next question, then, is no longer whether we need another movement.

Across society, countless movements and communities are already responding to spiritual hunger, political polarization, ecological breakdown, economic inequality, and social isolation.

Again and again, I watched sincere communities develop strong internal coherence, then slowly become siloed and self-contained. Whether churches or spiritual communities, civic initiatives, regenerative networks, or cultural movements, they often developed their own language, assumptions, and moral frameworks, often without building bridges beyond their own circles.

Here are just some of the movement threads already doing vital work:

• Churches and spiritual groups
• Charities and social change efforts
• Civic engagement and bridge builders
• Regenerative culture movements
• Faith-based creation care initiatives
• Purpose-driven small businesses
• New economy and commons movements
• Localization, bioregional, and cosmolocalization networks
• Pro-democracy and civil society movements
• Arts, culture, and creative community projects
• Local food sovereignty and permaculture movements
• Cooperative and mutual-aid initiatives
• Intentional communities and cohousing projects
• Open-source, decentralized, and digital commons communities
• Multi-faith and intercultural dialogue initiatives

Each of these movements carries real wisdom, cares deeply about humanity, and responds to real fractures in modern society. Yet even movements dedicated to healing fragmentation can unintentionally reproduce it in subtler ways.

Healthy parallel communities (a parallel polis) and revitalized institutions may be essential for cultural renewal, but without meaningful bridges between them, fragmentation simply reappears in new forms.

This does not mean giving up identity, convictions, or uniqueness. Families, faith communities, regenerative networks, intentional communities, local economies, and religious and spiritual traditions all matter deeply.

The invitation is not to dissolve difference, but to expand responsibility: to include bridge-building as an essential function of a healthy society.

The question then becomes:

Can communities cultivate relationships beyond their own worldview?

Can they remain in meaningful connection with those who may never share their language, ideology, or metaphysics?

Can they become part of a larger living fabric rather than functioning primarily as parallel islands of coherence?

Increasingly, this feels like one of the central civilizational questions of our time.

Preface: Living Between Worlds

At the age of twelve, something happened to me that changed my life forever. As I lay in the liminal space before sleep, I was immersed in a non-ordinary, ineffable encounter I was unprepared for—an overwhelming, loving presence that I would later interpret as a glimpse of a deeper, sacred Transcendent reality beyond what we normally see. It was at once awesomely beautiful yet frightening.

I didn’t have words for it then, but I knew it was real. What began in a single instant continued to unfold over many years. I called it the Luminous Web—a radiant sense of interconnectedness, as if every leaf, bird, and heartbeat were part of a vast and loving whole.

I was no longer separate. I was part of something sacred, intelligent, and alive. Despite life’s ups and downs, I felt an absolute trust and faith in that reality.

It wasn’t an idea I read about in a book or a belief grounded in tradition. It was a direct experience that stirred something within me that never faded. At the time, I didn’t link it to any religious figure. As the years went by and my journey deepened, I realized that the same Reality I encountered as a boy was the same Love I would later find in the life and presence of Jesus Christ.

And yet, when I returned to everyday life, the world I saw seemed the opposite of that Love. The society I re-entered taught me something else entirely:

• You are alone
• Others are threats and rivals, not kin
• All that matters is matter
• Compete, consume, and control
• The Sacred is irrelevant

Our systems, even the most well-meaning ones, seemed built on fragmentation, fear, and material striving—a world designed around separation.

That contradiction broke my heart.

I didn’t have the language to name it back then, but now I call it the Culture of Separation. My father, sensing my heartbreak, asked me a simple question that became my life’s compass:

“Well, son… what will you do about it?”

That question haunted me—not in a burdensome way, but in a way that awakened purpose. It set me on a path that would take decades to walk. I spent the next fifty years searching for answers.

I studied. I built. I made mistakes. I fell in love. Got married. Had children. Got divorced. Remarried. I tried to live according to what I had seen. I founded organizations, started companies, ran networks, and facilitated community movements that attempted to embody the coherence I once glimpsed as a boy. Along the way, I drew from every way of knowing I had access to—trained as a scientist, shaped by poetry, grounded in the concrete practice of community work. I welcomed wisdom from Indigenous elders, priests, Buddhist scholars, systems theorists, diverse spiritual traditions, forests, and pilot whales.

For years, I followed the thread of that early luminous experience, trusting the sense of belonging and sacred wholeness I had once touched. Everything changed in 1990, when that same Presence seemed to pursue me again—in a form I never expected.

It came while I was driving through Mexico, still grappling with how to translate that early glimpse into something practical and embodied. Out of nowhere, the veil lifted—not revealing what I was seeking, but what I had longed to see. I saw a figure on the road—Jesus Christ.

It wasn’t a metaphor or a dream, but a vision imprinted on my soul. I felt lifted upward, and suddenly I saw the planet from above. Instead of the lights of cities, I saw golden rays rising from the hearts of billions of people—streams of light converging into a great, radiant heart. It pulsed with a Love so total it dissolved all boundaries.

Only later did I recognize what I had seen: this was the heart of Jesus, not a distant ruler, but the very Love I had sensed as a child, now made visible, made personal. It was not a symbol or a belief but the living pattern of Divine Love pouring into the world.

What I had witnessed was not a new religion to be imposed but a sacred map—a Divine Design, what I later called the Ancient Blueprint—a Sacred Design embedded in reality itself.

This vision revealed more than Love as a feeling—it showed me Love as a structure.

The radiant heart above Earth formed a vertical thread: the connection between the Transcendent and the Immanent. It wasn’t abstract theology—it was an actual reality. I began to see how the Divine pattern could be mirrored on Earth—not just through personal devotion, but in how we live, relate, and build together.

That vertical descent of Love demanded horizontal embodiment: shaping community, economy, and belonging from the inside out. What I had seen from above, I now felt called to bring to the ground below.

The luminous, loving presence I had once glimpsed in all things stood before me in the person of Jesus. It wasn’t a different reality; it was that same sacred coherence from childhood, now embodied—not as a doctrine, but as a living pattern of Divine Love.

That vision gave me direction. If my first experience had raised the question, “How can a world so whole produce lives so fractured?”—this second experience began to offer an answer:

I didn’t suddenly become a pastor, but realized I had been given a “ministry”—one I was already living.

My work in community—from apprenticing with an Indigenous/Christian medicine woman to developing local food systems, economies, and civic networks—became a form of spiritual inquiry. Could the coherence I saw at twelve become a living pattern among us? Could Divine Love form structurally in neighborhoods, economies, and everyday relationships?

Over time, I began to see the pattern. I recognized it in Jesus’ teachings, especially his radical call to Love God and Love Others—not as a poetic metaphor or a call to be a good person, but as the very structure of Reality.

I saw it in the early Christian ecclesia, and again in Mahatma Gandhi’s village movements, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne’s Sarvodaya Shramadana network of village economies, and in the Parallel Polis movement created during the communist rule of Czechoslovakia. I saw it in Indigenous councils and recovery circles.

In each case, Love was not an ideal. It was the infrastructure.

This book is the fruit of that journey. It’s not a memoir, though it tells my story. It’s not a manual, though it offers models. It’s not a theology, though it touches the sacred.

It’s a field guide for remembering how we were meant to live.

As I wrote this book, I saw more clearly how deeply our civilization has “de-platformed” the Divine. Even those who believe in a higher power often leave it out of our civic life, governance, and design frameworks. That, too, is part of the Culture of Separation.

Here’s the more profound truth I’ve seen: Most people I meet believe in something greater. Call it God, Spirit, Divine Love, the Sacred. Surveys say nearly 90% of us believe in a higher power. Yet our society is organized as if the sacred is private and irrelevant—as if love is too soft to structure a culture, and virtue is admirable but insufficient for survival.

Family, religion, and education teach us to be kind, generous, forgiving, and truthful. And yet, to function in today’s systems, we’re often forced to compete, hoard, dominate, and wear a mask.

We’re taught the Virtues because they echo something we already know—they align with the deeper design of Reality. Despite knowing the truth of the Virtues, we’ve been conditioned to act otherwise: to take rather than give, to protect rather than trust, to perform rather than be.

That dissonance wears us down. Some compartmentalize, others give up and numb out. Many—especially our youth—experience ongoing anxiety or depression. Still others fight against “the system,” addressing symptoms rather than the prime cause: separation.

And still, no one escapes the ache of living out of alignment with who we truly are.

That ache is not a flaw. It’s the signal of something sacred breaking through. I have felt that ache myself since I was a young boy, standing between worlds: the “joyful cosmos” I had experienced as profoundly true, and the world I was expected to survive in.

This book is for those who feel that signal and want to respond—not with despair but with creativity, not by retreating but by participating in the birth of something new.

Not of a utopia that never was, but of an ancient truth that still lives beneath the noise: that we are made for communion. That love is the organizing design principle of reality. That the sacred is not just somewhere else. It is here, awaiting our attention, to align our lives with the grand design.

That’s how we begin to build a Culture of Connection, what I call Symbiotic Culture.

About the Author

Richard Flyer is an author, community-builder, and faith-rooted cultural strategist whose life’s work bridges science, faith, and civic renewal. Trained as a biologist, he studied pilot whale and dolphin communication at UC Santa Cruz and San Diego State before earning an M.S. in Biology. His early grounding in living systems science laid the foundation for what he later came to call Symbiotic Culture—a framework that integrates spiritual insight with practical tools for regenerative community life.

Richard’s career has spanned health, education, and grassroots leadership. He pioneered hyperbaric oxygen therapy programs in Nevada hospitals, taught in community colleges and detention facilities, and led nonprofits including the San Diego Food Bank, Neighbors United, and the Nevada Microenterprise Initiative. He has also worked closely with Sri Lanka’s Sarvodaya Shramadana movement, engaging its national network of 5,000 communities and millions of people. His work draws inspiration from Jesus and the early church, Gandhi’s village republics, and Václav Benda’s vision of the Parallel Polis.

For Richard, following Jesus is not about dogma but about daily discipleship and practice—learning to embody love, reconciliation, hospitality, and neighborliness in a world often marked by separation. Preface: Living Between Worlds

At the age of twelve, something happened to me that changed my life forever. As I lay in the liminal space before sleep, I was immersed in a non-ordinary, ineffable encounter I was unprepared for—an overwhelming, loving presence that I would later interpret as a glimpse of a deeper, sacred Transcendent reality beyond what we normally see. It was at once awesomely beautiful yet frightening.

I didn’t have words for it then, but I knew it was real. What began in a single instant continued to unfold over many years. I called it the Luminous Web—a radiant sense of interconnectedness, as if every leaf, bird, and heartbeat were part of a vast and loving whole.

I was no longer separate. I was part of something sacred, intelligent, and alive. Despite life’s ups and downs, I felt an absolute trust and faith in that reality.

It wasn’t an idea I read about in a book or a belief grounded in tradition. It was a direct experience that stirred something within me that never faded. At the time, I didn’t link it to any religious figure. As the years went by and my journey deepened, I realized that the same Reality I encountered as a boy was the same Love I would later find in the life and presence of Jesus Christ.

And yet, when I returned to everyday life, the world I saw seemed the opposite of that Love. The society I re-entered taught me something else entirely:

• You are alone
• Others are threats and rivals, not kin
• All that matters is matter
• Compete, consume, and control
• The Sacred is irrelevant

Our systems, even the most well-meaning ones, seemed built on fragmentation, fear, and material striving—a world designed around separation.

That contradiction broke my heart.

I didn’t have the language to name it back then, but now I call it the Culture of Separation. My father, sensing my heartbreak, asked me a simple question that became my life’s compass:

“Well, son… what will you do about it?”

That question haunted me—not in a burdensome way, but in a way that awakened purpose. It set me on a path that would take decades to walk. I spent the next fifty years searching for answers.

I studied. I built. I made mistakes. I fell in love. Got married. Had children. Got divorced. Remarried. I tried to live according to what I had seen. I founded organizations, started companies, ran networks, and facilitated community movements that attempted to embody the coherence I once glimpsed as a boy. Along the way, I drew from every way of knowing I had access to—trained as a scientist, shaped by poetry, grounded in the concrete practice of community work. I welcomed wisdom from Indigenous elders, priests, Buddhist scholars, systems theorists, diverse spiritual traditions, forests, and pilot whales.

For years, I followed the thread of that early luminous experience, trusting the sense of belonging and sacred wholeness I had once touched. Everything changed in 1990, when that same Presence seemed to pursue me again—in a form I never expected.

It came while I was driving through Mexico, still grappling with how to translate that early glimpse into something practical and embodied. Out of nowhere, the veil lifted—not revealing what I was seeking, but what I had longed to see. I saw a figure on the road—Jesus Christ.

It wasn’t a metaphor or a dream, but a vision imprinted on my soul. I felt lifted upward, and suddenly I saw the planet from above. Instead of the lights of cities, I saw golden rays rising from the hearts of billions of people—streams of light converging into a great, radiant heart. It pulsed with a Love so total it dissolved all boundaries.

Only later did I recognize what I had seen: this was the heart of Jesus, not a distant ruler, but the very Love I had sensed as a child, now made visible, made personal. It was not a symbol or a belief but the living pattern of Divine Love pouring into the world.

What I had witnessed was not a new religion to be imposed but a sacred map—a Divine Design, what I later called the Ancient Blueprint—a Sacred Design embedded in reality itself.

This vision revealed more than Love as a feeling—it showed me Love as a structure.

The radiant heart above Earth formed a vertical thread: the connection between the Transcendent and the Immanent. It wasn’t abstract theology—it was an actual reality. I began to see how the Divine pattern could be mirrored on Earth—not just through personal devotion, but in how we live, relate, and build together.

That vertical descent of Love demanded horizontal embodiment: shaping community, economy, and belonging from the inside out. What I had seen from above, I now felt called to bring to the ground below.

The luminous, loving presence I had once glimpsed in all things stood before me in the person of Jesus. It wasn’t a different reality; it was that same sacred coherence from childhood, now embodied—not as a doctrine, but as a living pattern of Divine Love.

That vision gave me direction. If my first experience had raised the question, “How can a world so whole produce lives so fractured?”—this second experience began to offer an answer:

I didn’t suddenly become a pastor, but realized I had been given a “ministry”—one I was already living.

My work in community—from apprenticing with an Indigenous/Christian medicine woman to developing local food systems, economies, and civic networks—became a form of spiritual inquiry. Could the coherence I saw at twelve become a living pattern among us? Could Divine Love form structurally in neighborhoods, economies, and everyday relationships?

Over time, I began to see the pattern. I recognized it in Jesus’ teachings, especially his radical call to Love God and Love Others—not as a poetic metaphor or a call to be a good person, but as the very structure of Reality.

I saw it in the early Christian ecclesia, and again in Mahatma Gandhi’s village movements, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne’s Sarvodaya Shramadana network of village economies, and in the Parallel Polis movement created during the communist rule of Czechoslovakia. I saw it in Indigenous councils and recovery circles.

In each case, Love was not an ideal. It was the infrastructure.

Introduction: The Turning Point We’ve Been Waiting For

There’s a question echoing within the human heart today—a quiet longing beneath the chaos of politics, polarization, and planetary crisis. It’s not just “Why can’t we all get along?” but something more profound:

We’re flooded with information and good intentions, but trust erodes. We build movements for justice, systems for change, and technologies for connection, yet still drift apart. Even our most inspired efforts hit the same invisible wall: fragmentation, fatigue, and disillusionment.

But what if the problem isn’t just institutional or political? What if it’s existential, rooted in a cultural architecture that teaches us to relate to one another, the Earth, and the Divine as separate, competing parts instead of one interwoven whole?

That question has haunted me and guided my life’s work.

This book is not a memoir, a manual, or a thesis. It offers a cultural turning point—an invitation to look beyond ideological debate and remember a deeper reality we’ve forgotten: a shared foundation beneath our systems, stories, and suffering.

I call it the Ancient Blueprint. By this, I mean the sacred pattern of reality—spiritual, social, and ecological—that has guided thriving communities and cultures throughout history. It holds the key to birthing what I now call the Symbiotic Age: a new era of human flourishing rooted in mutuality, sacred design, and connection.

Love As the Structure of Reality

If this book has a single conviction, it is this: “Love God and Love Others.”

This isn’t just a metaphor, moral teaching, or call to be nice—it’s a revelation of how reality is structured.

He was revealing the nature of existence: that we live in a relational universe. Everything is connected—nothing exists in isolation. From the subatomic bonds that hold matter together to the ecosystems that sustain life and the communities that shape our humanity, reality is woven through relationships.

This Love, revealed in Jesus and made available to all, is not a vague force but a living Presence—calling us into relationship and service. This is the Kingdom of Heaven: not merely a future destination, but a present reality—made visible wherever love, justice, and mutual belonging reign. It is the divine order manifesting when we align with the sacred pattern that holds everything together.

Love is more than an ethical ideal. It is the generative power that binds the cosmos—the blueprint by which life flourishes. Whether you call it Divine Love, the Spirit, or simply the presence of God, this Love is not distant. It is alive, personal, and draws us into communion.

Received by grace, Divine Love awakens in us a desire to love in return—not just upward, but outward. Love seeks the other—healing, bridging, belonging.

This movement of Love—outward, connective, generative—doesn’t stop with individuals. It forms the scaffolding of communities, offering a tangible structure for how we live, relate, and build together.

The Lineage of Love

Not only is this structure of Love written into the cosmos, but it is also embodied in human lives and culture. It is a sacred pattern passed down not just in texts but in communities of practice, courage, and compassion.

It’s also the lineage that has informed and inspired me, from Jesus to Mahatma Gandhi to Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, and is carried forward in the community movements I’ve helped co-create—living patterns of love and service that repeat and adapt at every scale, from small circles to whole bioregional economies.

This “lineage of love” is not only moral—it’s structural. Jesus, Gandhi, and Dr. Ariyaratne were not merely good men; they left a legacy of cultural infrastructure. Each one translated Love into systems and communities that honored the dignity of every human being. They refused to confine spiritual truth to private experience or political ideology. Instead, they showed us how to build what I now call Symbiotic Networks—containers that can gather people across human-made divisions.

This is the shift from “love as sentiment” to “love as structure.” But that sacred pattern has been overshadowed and obscured by a competing cultural logic that distorts love into control and relationship into rivalry.

The Culture of Separation: The Hidden Wound

Much of the suffering we see today isn’t merely the result of bad actors or flawed systems. It’s the predictable outgrowth of something more profound and harder to see: the Culture of Separation.

This culture functions like an unseen operating system. It subtly whispers:

And other people? They are threats, not kin.

These messages don’t need to be taught in classrooms or preached from podiums. They’re embedded in our media, institutions, economic assumptions, and unconscious habits of thought. Even our most well-meaning social change efforts often reflect this hidden worldview. It’s what turns noble intentions to bring people together into isolated silos that keep them apart. That’s why we create more programs, launch more campaigns, and publish more content—yet still feel more fragmented and powerless than ever.

Most tragically, this culture convinces us that our deep yearning for wholeness is naïve or weak.

But here’s a deeper truth: our desire for connection is not a sign of weakness—it’s evidence of a profound structure breaking through. That structure—the Ancient Blueprint—still resides within us. It doesn’t need to be invented; it needs to be remembered and reclaimed.

Cultural Recovery: Healing from the Addiction to Separation

Reclaiming this loving legacy requires a radical shift to what the 12-Step recovery movement calls “a new way of life” — from our collective addiction to separation, to a conscious practice of connection. Put another way, to recover from the wounding of the Culture of Separation, we must simultaneously recover our connection to this Ancient Blueprint.

Like healing from addiction, cultural recovery begins with the courage to see clearly and the humility to try something new. The first step is to acknowledge that we are addicted to old ways of thinking and doing: domination, division, control, and the illusion of separation. We keep reenacting the same patterns—from new systems and structures to reforming, protesting, attacking, and seizing power—hoping they’ll deliver different results.

But how’s that working for us? It isn’t. It can’t.

As you’ll see throughout this book, the second and third steps in the recovery journey require turning our lives over to a higher power. I suggest that higher power is the Transcendent, and the Ancient Blueprint is the sacred design for how that power flows through our lives and communities.

Think about it. Our crisis isn’t just political or institutional—it’s spiritual.

We’ve built political, economic, cultural, and even religious systems with good intentions. But over time, many have become disconnected from the very Source they were meant to reflect: Divine Love. When competition replaces cooperation, dominance eclipses humility, and power outweighs compassion, we lose touch with the sacred pattern of communion that was always meant to guide us.

We’ve arranged our lives into silos—tribes, factions, political parties, gangs, cartels, ideologies—trapped in loops of fear and rivalry, unable to see beyond the identities we’ve inherited and the cultural habits we’re addicted to. We talk about “thinking outside the box,” but we’re still operating within the logic of the box: domination, usury, control. We’ve mistaken conformity for wisdom and outsourced discernment to distant authorities.

Cultural recovery is not about tearing everything down.

The issue isn’t a lack of goodness. This sacred recovery is already happening. It manifests in ordinary people performing extraordinary acts daily—quietly serving, helping, and healing. That’s why so many local acts of goodness—billions of them—occur outside the spotlight of institutional power and media.

It’s that these acts remain scattered, isolated, and invisible to each other.

This book invites us to face that challenge—and offers the hope of gathering the scattered embers into a coherent flame. Throughout history, others have faced this same rupture and responded not by seizing power but by embodying Love in action.

A Living Lineage: Embodying the Ancient Blueprint

This is the path I’ve chosen to walk. It is both personal and cultural, born from deep spiritual conviction and expressed through practical action. It follows the lineage I mentioned—a living thread stretching through history, weaving through cultures, communities, and courageous lives. This lineage first revealed itself to me through Jesus, the essence of what I now call the Ancient Blueprint: a sacred architecture rooted in Divine Love.

In this realm, the last are first, the peacemakers are blessed, and the humble inherit the Earth.

Jesus built not so much a religion but a countercultural movement—embodied and practiced by the early Christian ecclesia. These small, local kinship assemblies lived out the Kingdom of Heaven within the empire, forming networks of mutual benefit in the face of domination. They didn’t aim to overthrow Rome with swords. Instead, they lived a different truth, and in doing so, they seeded a parallel society.

That pattern—the Ancient Blueprint—did not disappear. It has re-emerged wherever people remembered who they were and organized around what matters most. I observed it in Gandhi’s vision of Sarvodaya, a commonwealth of self-reliant village republics.

I saw it again in the work of Dr. Ariyaratne, who established a network of over 5,000 villages across Sri Lanka based on shared virtues, mutual uplift, and spiritual awakening. These were not programs but living organisms—parallel societies grounded in the transcendent, embodied in the local.

Parallel Societies Across History

And I saw it in the Czech Parallel Polis: a civic resistance movement born under communist rule that refused to fight the empire on its terms. Instead, it created a culture of truth, moral coherence, and community in the shadow of oppression. Like the early Christians and the Sarvodaya villages, the Parallel Polis didn’t seek to conquer. It sought to cohere.

This lineage of the Ancient Blueprint spans from Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom to Gandhi’s Sarvodaya, Dr. Ari’s village networks, and the Czech Parallel Polis.

Though arising from different cultural and spiritual roots, each movement gave form to the same sacred architecture—a living echo of the Ancient Blueprint in action.

I recognized the same recurring pattern in these diverse communities and movements: ordinary people rediscovering their divine dignity, that they were made in the image of God, organizing around shared Virtues, and building communities of mutual benefit. Not through hierarchy, but through humble coherence. Not through ideology, but through love made visible.

That is what Symbiotic Culture seeks to become—a Culture of Connection, emerging from the grassroots—from the lived reality of local communities, where relationships, trust, and mutual care are built face-to-face, neighbor to neighbor, and the existing regional networks are connected.

This is how we apply the Ancient Blueprint to bring Heaven to Earth—not all at once, not through a sweeping act of policy or power, but step by step, soul by soul, neighborhood by neighborhood, community by community.

From Principle to Practice: Translating Love into Systems of Belonging

If the Ancient Blueprint revealed a sacred pattern, the challenge was translating these Divine Design principles into grounded practice. For me, it began with a haunting question:

How do we translate “Love God and Love Others” from spiritual conviction into civic design?

Models for community change usually start with external solutions—new systems, institutions, and technologies, all of which require formal organization and funding. In places like Logan Heights and Sherman Heights in San Diego and later Reno, Nevada, we learned that true transformation must be revealed, not imposed. It has to grow organically from the people, the place, and the presence of the Divine.

We weren’t simply launching new projects—we were testing whether Divine Love could become the organizing force of civic life.

And it can.

What emerged wasn’t another nonprofit, initiative, or ideology. It was a living network ecosystem: Symbiotic Culture.

The repeatable pattern that appeared in neighborhood gatherings, local food systems, and living economy networks became what we later called Symbiotic Culture DNA — a set of living principles and protocols that could spread and scale virally in many communities simultaneously. It resembled the organic mycelium network beneath a forest—quiet, alive, and connective, linking people and efforts through trust, love, and shared purpose.

The community doesn’t need to be formally or “professionally” designed when we align with that living system. It emerges naturally, like cells organizing into a body. This is why the heart of Symbiotic Culture is not an institution. It’s a way of being that acknowledges we live in a relational universe, where everything is indeed interrelated.

From Love to Structure: Symbiotic Networks as a Civic Ecosystem

Over the years, one of the most powerful embodiments of relational design—the idea that different groups, systems, or entities are meaningfully interconnected—has taken shape in what I call Symbiotic Networks.

They are not top-down institutions or loosely structured gatherings. When aligned, they foster trust, reveal common needs, and unite people across differences, enabling lives, vocations, and worldviews to come together in mutual service.

These networks decentralize agency rather than centralize control. They don’t demand ideological conformity. They invite alignment around universal Virtues, shared values, and common community needs.

In this book, I will share examples from my community work in low-income, multicultural, gang-affected neighborhoods in San Diego, where we addressed public safety, and in Reno, Nevada, where we strengthened a local living economy, built a Local Food System Network, and established a neighbor-to-neighbor network, along with an arts, culture, and sustainability festival.

These Symbiotic Networks can take shape in any neighborhood or an entire region, and by the end of this book, you will see how it’s been done, and how you can be a “node of change” in your community.

Each node is more than a point on a map; it’s a living cell in a greater body, a local hub of trust, relationship, and purpose.

Whether it’s a neighborhood, a faith community, a main street business, a grassroots nonprofit, or a circle of friends, every node becomes a vessel of mutual care and sacred interconnection—woven into a networked ecosystem of renewal.

These lived experiments represent more than a method—they embody the cultural shift this book aims to catalyze.

A Cultural Change Movement, Not a Program

This book is not about scaling a toolkit. It’s about catalyzing a cultural movement—a shift from separation to connection, scarcity to generosity, and domination to service. It’s about revealing a possibility that has always existed: that we are already one body, interdependent, and part of a greater whole that longs to manifest in the real world.

The practical outgrowth of that vision is what I call the birth of a Symbiotic Age—a global commonwealth of regional economies rooted in trust, virtue, and local belonging.

These are not pipe dreams. The Sarvodaya Movement established an ecosystem of 5,000 village societies in Sri Lanka. In the Czech Republic, the Parallel Polis demonstrated how spiritual communities can survive and thrive under oppression. In our work, we witnessed fractured communities and cities begin to heal, not through ideology but incarnated love.

You are already part of it, right where you are. I hope this book will help you see your role in this shift. That change begins with how we see reality, what we assume about people, power, and the nature of the world we inhabit.

The Symbiotic movement we are building requires more than new structures or systems. It calls for a deeper way of seeing—a lens that can sustain transformation beyond moments of urgency or crisis.

That lens is a worldview.

A Relational Worldview: Making Sense in a Fractured Age

Our worldviews shape everything—what we notice, how we relate, and what we believe is possible. Many of today’s political, ecological, and economic crises are interrelated. They are symptoms of a more profound spiritual crisis rooted in fragmented and competing worldviews. Yet most of us don’t realize we have a worldview because we don’t see it — we see the world through it. Like a pair of invisible lenses, it shapes how we interpret everything around us.

So, given the diversity of competing worldviews, how do we unite?

Here’s the good news.

Let me explain.

A relational worldview does not erase difference. Instead, it offers a deeper shared language, not merely of words but of understanding and orientation. This language is rooted not in control or separation but in communion, participation, and mutual recognition. It provides a common way to perceive, relate to, and act across cultures and traditions.

This worldview is implicit in the Sermon on the Mount, Indigenous cosmologies, and the Gospel of John’s vision of the Logos—the divine pattern of wisdom and relational order woven into all creation. It is not a belief system, but a way of being—one that aligns with the reality that everything is connected and nothing exists in isolation.

That’s what I mean when I say the ideas in this book are grounded in reality, not merely idealistic or technocratic. You will learn how local communities organically develop through trusted third-party connections, person-to-person, and network-to-network. You’ll discover how this process of emergent community operates in the real world, enabling you to replicate it in your region or network.

Walking the Path Together

The title of this book—Birthing the Symbiotic Age—is not metaphorical. It’s literal. I’ve come to believe we are in the midst of a planetary passage from an age of extraction and domination to one of mutualism and service.

This isn’t something that can be engineered from the top down.

The tools I present are not meant to replace what’s already working. They are designed to amplify and magnify it by “Connecting the Good.” By ‘the Good,’ I mean the people, projects, and institutions already aligned with compassion, justice, healing, and mutual uplift—efforts like building local economies and food systems, faith-based service, neighborhood care networks, regenerative culture, mutual aid networks, civic engagement, and much more.

Connecting the Good means weaving these often-isolated efforts across organizations, faith communities, businesses, local governments, and mutual aid groups into living ecosystem networks of cooperation and shared purpose. It’s a way of transforming scattered acts of service into a coherent Power for renewal—perhaps humanity’s greatest untapped resource and superpower.

This book unfolds in four arcs that mirror my development and the unfolding of transformation itself.

Formation begins with my personal story and the rediscovery of the Ancient Blueprint. It traces how I came to view Divine Love not only as a spiritual principle but as the sacred ordering system of life, and how that truth began reshaping how I perceived people, community, and culture. Application examines how these principles were applied in real-world experiments across neighborhoods, cities, and regional economies. From addressing gang violence to supporting local food systems and economies, as well as neighbors helping neighbors, this section presents concrete stories of how Love transforms into civic scaffolding. Readers will discover how to nurture trust-based collaboration and develop living networks of mutual support without the need to control or formalize everything.

Integration unites the spiritual and the structural. It shows how sacred design influences not just interpersonal relationships, but entire systems—economic, ecological, and institutional. You’ll learn how the logic of communion can shape everything from governance to technology, and start to see how new patterns of belonging can emerge. You will gain a framework for coordinating community efforts.

Finally, in Activation, you are invited to walk the path yourself. This final arc provides a roadmap for carrying this work into your context and community, through approaches like Symbiotic Circles and Networks, the Network Commons, and practices of relational leadership that empower collective transformation from the ground up.
